Our All About Autism Booklet is a free downloadable resource designed to help families, educators, and professionals understand autism with more confidence and compassion. It explains autism as a natural variation in human neurology, explores common traits and experiences, and supports a more inclusive, accepting approach.

What You’ll Learn

This booklet supports readers to move beyond myths and stereotypes, and towards a fuller understanding of autistic experiences — including differences that may be less visible. It also highlights the importance of removing barriers and creating environments where autistic people can thrive.

What’s Inside

The booklet includes clear sections on:

  • What autism is (including a neuro-affirming, social model perspective)
  • The autistic spectrum explained as multi-dimensional (not “mild to severe”)
  • Traits and characteristics, including communication, sensory differences, routines, transitions, intense interests, masking, executive functioning, and more
  • Meltdowns and shutdowns – what they are, what they can feel like, and how to support
  • Autistic burnout – signs, impact, and support strategies
  • Language matters – including identity-first language and avoiding harmful terminology
  • Origins and history of autism (a helpful overview for context)
  • Myth-busting – clear explanations that challenge common misconceptions

Who It’s For

This booklet is helpful for:

  • Parents and carers (including those new to autism)
  • Grandparents and wider family members
  • Teachers, TAs, and ALN staff
  • Professionals supporting autistic children and young people
  • Anyone who wants a clearer, more respectful understanding of autism

Why We Created It

Autism is often talked about in ways that are confusing, clinical, or deficit-focused. Many families tell us they are left trying to piece together information from lots of places — and often encountering myths or judgement along the way.

We created the All About Autism Booklet to offer one clear, supportive resource that helps people understand autistic experiences with greater empathy and accuracy. It’s designed to move the focus away from “fixing” autistic people and towards understanding needs, valuing differences, and reducing barriers — at home, in school, and across the community.
